Richard was born in 1906 and is the oldest surviving world war 11 veteran and centenarian.After departure from service in the military, Richard Overton established a home in Texas where he has lived since then.
The centenarian remembers the horrors of the war that include seeing his comrades fall in battle. Richard reveals that the horrors of the war remain permanently imprinted in his brain. The veteran also confesses their great joy when they came home temporarily and the difficulty of going back to the battle field. He says it took great courage and sacrifice on their part. However, he is still glad that he joined the military.
Overton has had a busy time making appearances across the country especially during the veterans memorial day. He has met very high profile figures. Among them was president Obama during an official tour into the white house. The president deeply thanked and praised him for his role in the world war 11.He has also had an opportunity to meet the governor of Texas.
However, it still remains controversial whether the centenarian was present during the attack on the Pearl Harbor. A statement by Obama suggests he saw all the action at the Pearl Harbor. However records of this remain scanty.
After his departure from the military, Overton took up a job at a furniture store and later on joined the department of treasury in Texas. His attention on the internet is attributed to his revelation that he would smoke cigars and drink whiskey-stiffened coffee during his memorial day. He however remains cognisant of the fact that a number of people would want to do something special for him during this day, but maintains that how he would love to spend the Memorial Day.
His service to his country was recognized by the mayor of Austin who described him as an extraordinary man.Overton took the opportunity to advise the young generation to become active in different physical activities instead of spending all their time watching.Together with his fellow veterans Overton has had an opportunity to tour the memorial of Martin Luther King. This visit was sponsored by Honour Flight. This is an organization that has and continues to facilitate the visits of veterans to different memorials as a way appreciating their significant contribution to society.
Mr. Overton, despite his age, is able to do what he wants to do; he stands, walks around without a cane, drives a car and generally looks healthy. This is according to him is attributable to active physical life, a baby aspirin and whiskey.
Interestingly, despite his age, Mr. Overton can engage in numerous physical activities such as driving, walking without a cane and looks healthy. He attributes this to being physically active and taking whiskey.This memorial is however a departure from the previous memorials he has enjoyed. Most of his friends have passed on including a long time confidant and a member of his platoon. Richard wishes that at least one of them was still alive. This has occasionally made him feel lonely. Despite being married for twice, Richard has had no children and has been a widower for 22 years.
