Fun With Alcohol Ink Tiles

By Amy Green

Those who are looking for an art project that is fun and simple enough for everyone to enjoy have plenty of options to consider. One of the popular choices that a lot of people are trying is alcohol ink tiles. These have had such a rise in popularity lately because the supplies are inexpensive and they are simple to make.

Some of the main things that are needed for this type of a project include tile coasters, inks in the desired colors, paint, spray sealers, and brushes. These are all not very expensive to buy, so this can be a project that stays within a reasonable budget. However, it is always possible to get the very best inks and other supplies if the project being made is intended to be of superior quality.

A wonderful idea for what to do with an art project like this after it is completed and looks beautiful is to give it to someone special as a gift. Anyone can buy a gift in the store, and no matter how expensive it is, something that is hand-made will always have more meaning to the recipient. Making something shows that the person really cares and put a lot of time and effort into it.

Wax paper is usually the recommended material to use as a protective surface when doing this type of painting. Especially if you are indoors and painting with little kids, there is always a risk of leaving stains on the carpet, walls, table, and whatever else the kids can get their hands on. Using a disposable material as a spill canvas can prevent catastrophe.

A generous amount of an alcoholic solution is best for making sure the tile is completely cleaned off and ready to be made into your canvas. It does not take a lot of time, and it can make all the difference between having a beautiful or lackluster tile. Nobody likes little surprises crusted to what is otherwise a beautiful piece of art.

The painters who might have the easiest time getting used to this slightly different form of creating art are those who have used watercolors. That is because the process of dropping the liquid inks onto a surface coated with alcohol is slightly comparable to the way watercolors interact together. However, it is not hard for anyone to learn.

The challenging part in adding drops of colors onto the tile is getting the color to go where you want it to go, then trying to get it to stay there. Because of the way liquids move, this is a unique challenge that can be difficult at first, but the effects can be very beautiful. The key is to be efficient in delivering the different colors to the tile.

It is very important to have everything placed and ready to go before getting started. Once the project begins, there will be no time to fumble around and look for that one special color that you need. Carefully setting out all the inks that will be used in the order they are needed in is most helpful.
