The term photographer comes from a Greek word. When translated into English, it means drawing with light. By definition, a photographer is an individual who makes photographs. The individual is usually skilled in taking photos of people, landscapes, machines, and plants. There are many photographers in the United States, and they are employed in various industries. Some of the industries that employ the most photographers are photographic services, newspapers, television broadcasting, arts, recreation, entertainment, universities, colleges, professional schools, and publishers. There is also a great number of these professional who are self-employed. According to statistics, more than sixty percent of all photographers worked in the private practice industry in the year 2012.

The specialty of the photographer usually determines the kind of environment they do their work. Studios are usually the typical work environments for portrait photographers. They need to take private photographs in public places such as offices and schools as well as private photos in private homes. The typical work environments for aerial photographers are in aircraft.

The work of most news and commercial photographers involve travelling to various destinations, both locally and internationally. News photographers have to work for long hours, usually on an irregular basis. They work in uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous surroundings. For instance, they may need to travel to war zones to capture photographs of what is going on. The job requires them to be available on the job after receiving a short notice.

In this job, one has to move for long distances on foot. The job also involves spending several hours standing. The equipment used for capturing photos and doing related tasks can be heavy and one has to carry it for hours. As such, physical fitness is a major requirement.

According to statistical evidence, for every three photographers, one works on a part-time basis. Work schedules for photographers are very flexible. There are several different specialties in which photographers can specialize. Similarly, each specialty also differs in the season when it has the highest demand. For example, spring and summer months are usually peak seasons for wedding photographers.

There is no formal education needed for one to work as a photographer. However, to attract more employers, these workers usually pursue various education routes. A photographer may have a degree in photography. Such courses improve chances of employment as well as personal skills in the field. There are other related fields that one may pursue to work in this industry.

Courses in photography are offered at junior and community colleges, private technical and trade schools, vocational-technical institutes, and universities among other academic institutes. Subjects in photography cover various techniques, processes, and equipment. Various types of photographers also find having knowledge in accounting, marketing, and business among other fields to be useful.
