A Moonshine Still Can Have Many Different Uses

By Donna Bell

There are coffee lovers and tea lovers. Some people drink expensive designer distilled water all day long. Certain individuals are interested in having a taste of alcohol upon occasion. You can find many different kinds of wines and beers in liquor stores. Some come in boxes at a very reasonable price. Others have been bottled in certain years that make them rare and extremely expensive. It is becoming more popular to make beer and wine at home. Some individuals are even interested in brewing whiskey in a moonshine still.

Moonshine, hooch, shine, or white lightning has been around for a long time. Most people associate it with the backwoods of the rural south. Actually, it came to prominence during the Prohibition era when all manufacture and distribution of liquor was outlawed in the United States. Enterprising individuals went into the bootlegging business and became rich providing illegal alcohol to people willing to risk arrest over it.

Today owning stills is becoming more and more popular with the public. They are legal to own and easy to find on the internet. Companies sell new and used ones, and there are plenty of websites that offer kits and plans for those interested in building a still from scratch. New and restored stills are moderately priced, some less than five hundred dollars. You can even bid on them online.

You don't even have to be interested in making alcohol to be intrigued by the equipment. Most are made of copper, and the best are nothing short of works of art. Many people shop for antique stills to decorate rooms in their homes. They are certainly great conversation pieces.

If you decide to become a moonshine aficionado, you will probably want to impress your friends with your knowledge about the brew. Most people do not realize that this liquor is not cut or aged. When it is ready to be consumed, the color should be clear and the liquor between one hundred fifty and one hundred seventy proof.

Guests might also be interested to hear how the stuff is associated with the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. In the old days, sheriffs and tax revenuers were on the lookout for illegal stills, and the moonshiners knew it. They outfitted their cars with revved up engines so they could outrun the authorities. Eventually somebody thought up the idea of racing the cars around a track, and stock car racing was born.

The biggest question about this activity concerns the legality of it. The fact is that, in most states, it not legal to produce moonshine for personal consumption. In certain states, the commercial production of this whiskey is permitted, but only after purchasing all applicable licenses. The government can raid the homes of private citizens suspected of illegal activity and confiscate all equipment it finds.

The stills are interesting objects whether you are making whiskey in them or using them for decoration. They have a fascinating history and can be enjoyed in a variety of ways.

  2. My understanding is… Distillation is legal in Missouri on the state level, limited right for home use only. Missouri Statute 311.055 provides that, “No person at least twenty-one years of age shall be required to obtain a license to manufacture intoxicating liquor, as defined in section 311.020, for personal or family use. The aggregate amount of intoxicating liquor manufactured per household shall not exceed two hundred gallons per calendar year if there are two or more persons over the age of twenty-one years in such household, or one hundred gallons per calendar year if there is only one person over the age of twenty-one years in such household. Any intoxicating liquor manufactured under this section may not be offered for sale”. This section is in conflict with Section 311.050, which says, “It shall be unlawful for any person, firm, partnership or corporation to manufacture, sell or expose for sale in this state intoxicating liquor, as defined in Section 311.020, in any quantity, without taking out a license”. Because Section 311.055 is directed toward a specific circumstance, it should be controlling and should be considered an exception to Section 311.050.
