Things To Consider During A Campus Crisis Response Plan

Crisis is sometimes referred by many as disaster and it should be well planned for or else it can result to a lot of damages. This is actually an event that can affect or has already affected the continuity of some university or reputation of that university. One of major components of crisis management strategy is communication, preparedness and awareness. It is very vital for faculty staff, students and also visitors to be aware of how they can possibly help themselves as well as others during those emergency situations. It is very important to have campus crisis response plan in each and every college.

All universities should be seen committed to support students welfare, faulty, teaching and non teaching staff as well as its visitors. The strategy is supposed to be formulated in accordance with relevant laws, policies, regulations and institution mission. The strategy should support the overall college mission. The main aim of crisis management in colleges is to optimize human survival in that college and also preserve property.

It is recommended for all colleges to have response plan for such situations. The main goal here is to basically establish a comprehensive framework where institutions can demonstrate their readiness, mechanism put in place for recoveries and how well can they mitigate impact of disaster. Some disasters are known to have serious effect on environment while others may cause serious structural damages on surrounding properties.

Most of the times crisis are sudden and also unforeseen or sometimes others have varying warning periods. The strategy is basically aimed at being flexible to generally accommodate risks of all kinds, duration and magnitudes. The college crisis management strategy is usually put into action whenever a disaster, natural or man made disrupts or interferes with normal institution operations, creates adverse damages, poses danger to life or when such events occurs just within the college community.

The support of any strategy in a college should begin with the chancellor then go down to other concerned parties or shareholders. The strategy is used mainly to train or educate institutional supervisors on how to handle emergency situations. It is recommended for universities to be always prepared to deal with any kind of situation when it happens. They should have an efficient pro active disaster reaction management strategy. The management of such institutions should ensure the college resources are well allocated and utilized.

Some of the crisis or disasters a college may be exposed to include natural calamities such as snow, ice storms and tornadoes. Other disasters can be incidents like chemical explosions, release of poisonous materials or hazardous materials, epidemics, power outages, water shortages pandemics and many other emergencies pertaining health.

The assumptions usually assume the worst case scenario such as interruption of normal and important supply streams, serious damages to structures and also building, poor communication with outside world, extreme weather condition that may possibly interrupt all sorts of movement and blocking or all access routes.

When coming up with an action plan, there are some assumptions that are generally taken into consideration. They are known as planning assumptions and they assume the worst case scenario. Some of the assumptions include interruption of critical utilities like power and water, inadequate regional as well as local services and lastly destruction of buildings.
