Plan A Pirate Birthday Party NJ Style

By Freida Michael

Your child is about to celebrate a milestone and he can hardly wait for the event that you are going to plan. You know he wants a pirate birthday party NJ style and you will do anything within your power to make it the most spectacular gathering ever. Middletown, NJ, has many venues that will have just what you need to throw a spectacular event.

The only problem is that you don't quite know where to begin. There is so much to consider. Decorations, door prizes, goody bags, games, crafts, food, and invitations are just a few things on your long list to consider. This theme is so intriguing and you can't wait to begin the preparations.

The invitations should be your very first consideration. Ready-made designs are always in good taste but you can also make your own. This does take time, creativity, and extra funds for materials and postage. Choose or make the best ones that fit your youngster's age or interests. A ship or map motif is always interesting. A aged map could be the main design with directions to your house.

Choose a costume for the guest of honor to wear as he greets his guests at the door. This should definitely reflect the party theme. Breeches, an eye patch, a hat, a hook for his arm, and even a stuffed parrot would complete the outfit. Encourage guests to wear their own versions of this type of apparel.

Your biggest and most exciting challenge will be decorating for this once-in-a-lifetime event. The end result will depend on the indoor and outdoor space you have at your disposal, your budget, and the creativity you can conjure. Ask other parents who have held similar events to assist you with suggestions and props. You can make pirate ships for centerpieces and fill them with tiny treasures include candy, trinkets or foil-wrapped chocolate. Add mini-rolled treasure maps, small anchors, flags, and other items around the base to add more interest and impact.

The games you arrange for the guests could include a fun treasure hunt where each participant or team is given a map to hidden treasures. The clues will lead them to the fantastic prizes that you have selected just for them. For crafting, have them assemble hats from colorful paper or captain's hooks from large plastic cups and aluminum foil. A parrot pinata would make a great finale.

The cake could resemble a ship or a treasure chest. Cupcakes would be a fun alternative with skull and cross-bone, ship, and anchor designs on them. Cut and hollow out a large watermelon into a the shape of a ship, add fresh fruit such as melons and grapes, and add masts and flags, for a healthy snack alternative. Goody bags are the best part. Have them ready to hand out to the guests as they leave. Gold foil-wrapped chocolates and trinkets could be placed in miniature treasure chests or tiny plastic ships to carry on the theme of the gathering.

Take pictures of this event so it will be remembered for years. A party such as this will have you really wondering how you are going to top this next year. On the plus side, you will be better equipped and more knowledgeable about throwing a fun and creative children's party.
