The Best Dragon Books For Kids

By Enid Hinton

Children and adults alike are fascinated by mythical creatures like dragons. In adult literature through the ages they have been described a fierce, destructive creatures but in dragon books for kids, they appear in quite a different light. Many of them are funny, lovable creatures who go through adventures and get themselves into amusing situations. At the same time they still retain an element of mystery and magic.

The characters of the dragons in these stories are as diverse as the characters of humans. They may be fierce, grumpy, kind and funny. The way they look varies from smaller ones to enormous creatures with bodies of all shapes. They even come in all the colors of the rainbow, including pink. Most of them are fire breathing and have wings for flying. They are unpredictable creatures and a combination of the absurd and the practical often creates the kind of comedy that children thoroughly enjoy.

The behavior of dragons is unpredictable. One never really knows what they are going to do next and all sorts of adventures are the result of this. This helps children to stretch their imaginations. However, the children also have to be able to relate to these creatures and so they are naughty, clumsy, shy, greedy, adventurous and lonely, just like children.

These creatures stimulate the imagination and take children outside of humdrum every day life. At the same time, such stories often help children understand more about life and relationships. A child who experiences loneliness, for example, can relate to the loneliness of a creature who has no friends.

These dragons live in all sorts of strange places. Many dragons are described as living in caves hidden deep in remote mountains but those in novels written for children are more likely to be found wandering down the street in a town, finding their way into houses and schools. One story even has a dragon presiding over the school library and protecting the books. Their eating habits are very different from the ones who like to eat humans. They often prefer tacos and other treats and a couple of them are even vegetarians.

Many parents love reading stories about dragons to their children. These children often gravitate to stories like this when they begin reading for themselves and continue to read them as young adults. Today there are stories about dragons suitable for every age group, from toddlers to adults and they are widely available.

Many people today choose to buy books online as this offers the option of easily comparing prices and reading reviews to find the most suitable options. Lists of best sellers are also available and there are many forums where parents make suggestions about stories their children have enjoyed. The ones that often have the most appeal for children are those that make them laugh.

Stories that make children laugh are often the ones that are most popular and memorable. Introducing dragons opens up many magical and entertaining possibilities. For a start, they look amazing with their shiny scales, wings, spikes, claws. Secondly, they breathe fire. Of course, they may set their wings on fire by mistake or crash while learning to fly. Children never tire of hearing about their exploits.
