This is extremely important because it would teach the student how to mix colors until he is able to get the end result that he would want. Now for those who do not know, the basic theory is revolved around the color wheel that is created by Sir Isaac Newton. This wheel shows how the primary colors would mix in order to form secondary colors. The primary colors are blue, yellow, and red and if they are mixed together, they form the other colors of the spectrum.
Now after learning the basics, one will be moving on to the advanced lessons where he will encounter a little bit more computations. Now basically he will be learning about shades, brightness, and other things. However, the most basic things that he will at least learn would be the hue, chromaticity or chroma, saturation level, the value, and luminance.
Now on the top of the list of concepts to learn, there would be the hue. The the three primary colors that were mentioned above can be distinguished by measurement of hue. The hue is actually just the amount of light that is emitted from colors and it measures the strength of these colors.
Now the second concept on the list would be chromaticity or just simply chroma. The chroma would be measuring how colorful a pigment actually is by measuring the hue first. If one would find out that a certain shade has maximum hue, then it will have low chroma but if it has minimum hue, then it will have a high chroma.
The third concept to learn about would be saturation which measures the intensity of a pigment. When one would say intensity, he would be the strength of its brightness and how much it would affect the eyes. Colors that are bright like red, yellow, and other mixes with these are known to have high saturation.
After that, one will then be taught about value. Now the value actually measures brightness as a whole. If one pigment is bright, then it possesses a high value level as compared to one that is dark.

Now in order to measure luminance, one will first be using a mathematical calculation which involves getting the average of a group of colors and using a unit that is known as intensity per unit of the source. Measuring this is actually quite like measuring saturation but it has a lot more calculations.
