The Protection Ability Of N95 Respirators

By Ina Hunt

Filters are normally very crucial equipments in protection against entry of germs and harmful substances. There are close to seven different types of filters, and out of these, n95 respirators are preferred most of the times. They offer up to ninety five percent efficiency in the filtering of particles. It, therefore, means that only a small number of molecules can penetrate into the body of its wearer. However, this product is not capable of allowing oil particles to pass through it. Hence, blocking them from getting into contact with the wearer.

All molecules are usually taken through the respirators and unwanted elements are retained. The particles that remain are allowed to reach the wearer. During the manufacture n95 filters, cotton, plastic, glass and other special materials are combined. These are considered the best materials for retaining unwanted molecules. They are commonly preferred because of their ability to be easily disposed. Besides this, they are cheaper as compared to other filters.

There are various ways techniques involved in preventing particles that are not required. Firstly, the flow of air is restricted to one radius. This way, only small particles will penetrate the filter. Larger particles are not capable of following a curving contour. A movement similar Brownian motion also helps in preventing of harmful particles from passing through the respirator. There are also some special waxes, resins and plastics used for the purpose of coating the respirator. These create an electrostatic force that retains the unwanted particles.

Further prevention of particle entry is enhanced through the minimization of the velocity of particles passing through the filter. To achieve this, the shape and slop of the filter is manipulated to create a large surface area. It should, thus, be easier to prevent particles moving at a low velocity than those traveling at a high velocity.

This respirator should never be shared. This is a precaution since sharing exposes other wearers to contaminated particles that may cause them health problems. It is good for everybody to have a filter of his/her own. Doing this reduces the likelihood of passing on contaminated particles from a respirator used by one person to another person.

To attain efficiency, the gadget must first appropriately fit the person wearing it. Good fitting ensures that there is no leakage whatsoever. To be sure that the respirator is well fitting, the user must adjust its straps and ensure that is very tight comfortable on his/her face. He/she can also use mirrors to ensure that the equipment is accurately worn.

The name n95 is deliberately assigned to these devices to refer to the fact that testing shows that the item prevents up to 95% of harmful elements. However, with appropriate wearing, they can attain an efficiency that is slightly higher than the standard one. The high efficiency should not, however, serve a confirmation of complete protection from coming into contact with contaminated substances. This is due to the fact that some harmful elements will pass through the respirator and reach the body of the user. People who have had cases of respiratory problems in the past should see their doctors prior to using these products.

There are no fitting n95 filter for minors and people whose faces are hairy. This happens due to the fact that their faces cannot allow the respirators to fit tightly on them. The effectiveness of these gadgets when they are used by these categories of people is, therefore, reduced.
