How To Choose The Right Food Packaging Illustration

By Jaclyn Hurley

For a lot of people when asked what they choose when buying food they will usually say the taste or possibly the cost of what they are buying. However on an unconscious level it is often the images on the packaging in front of them that will influence their decision even if they are not necessarily aware of it. This is why it helps to have the right kind of food packaging illustration.

The illustration on the packaging is about more than just making the product look good. While this is important in and of itself it also provides people with an indication of who the product is aimed at and how it should be served. An illustration may show it as something that kids will love to eat or something ideal to serve for people who want to serve something special for a dinner party.

This is why before approaching an illustrator you need to consider this. Think about your target audience. Once you have an idea of who you are marketing the product towards it then helps to look around and see similar products on the shelves. You do not and should not wish to copy other designs but it can help to generate ideas for a final brief.

The idea behind a brief is to give details explaining to the illustrator what you want. It should tell them about who is going to buy the product and how you would like it presented to the customer. They should then be able to give you feedback and tell you how they will work on your brief.

It is best to look online to see who is available in your local area and possibly beyond. If possible you should meet illustrators in person. This will allow you to look through their portfolio and get more information on their qualifications and experience. Ideally they should also provide you with a quote for their work.

This will then make it easier to compare the different options available to you. It is generally recommended to compare at least three different illustrators. This ensures you get the best possible quality available in your price range. Remember you should not look solely in terms of price. It is often to pay a bit more in order to get better quality and more experience!

It is also worth considering whether you trust the person you work with. They should be willing to listen to you. This does not necessarily mean that they cannot give feedback but they should do so in a way that is helpful and not overly blunt. If you are in any doubt or do not feel comfortable then you should look elsewhere.

It is best to contact at least three food packaging illustrators. This will give you the chance to compare them in terms of both cost and the quality of their work and experience. It is also recommended to look for feedback and customer reviews online to help you make the right decision for your business and to make sure you choose someone who will make your product look good!
