Factors To Consider When Choosing Maine Retirement Communities

By Charmaine Foreman

If you are 55 years of age or older, you can move to one of the many types of retirement homes available. You can select a home based on your needs or preferences. The senior housing options to select from include independent living, active adult, Alzheimer care, nursing homes and continuing care facilities.

Seniors who opt to live in retirement facilities benefit in many ways. One of them is being secure. A large number of Maine retirement communities install monitoring devices such as CCTV cameras in public areas to keep residents from being victimized by criminals. They also employ security personnel who play a major role in enhancing security.

If you choose to move to a senior housing community, you will also enjoy increased companionship with your age mates as you mingle with people who have similar preferences to yours. Senior apartments also offer many amenities that you may not have access to when living in your own property. You will also get to participate in events or activities that encourage socialization.

There will be no need for you to travel long distances in order to meet your needs. Most senior housing facilities have shops that can meet your needs. There are also pharmacies and groceries near these facilities that can deliver the items you need. It is advisable to consider several things when choosing a senior housing facility.

Start by considering the location of the retirement home. If you have children, you can opt to reside in a community that is not too far away from where they live so that they can visit you any time they want. Another thing to consider is your health. If you are suffering from an ailment that requires regular medical care, it is wise to move to a facility that has physicians who can offer the assistance you need.

If you are anticipating that your health or that of your spouse will worsen in future, you can opt for a continuing care retirement home. Such a facility provides a wide variety of senior care options including independent living and nursing home care in the same site. If you find it difficult to complete activities of daily living while in such a facility, you can request to be transferred to an assisted living or skilled nursing facility at the same site.

Another factor to consider is whether you can afford the monthly fees that a senior housing facility charges. This is especially the case if you have a strict budget. You also need to consider the type of activities you may participate in when residing at such a facility. Choose a retirement community that has a golf course, swimming pool, tennis court or a fitness center if you want to remain physically active. You can also look out for facilities that offer planned activities such as outings.

Another thing to consider is whether the staff members of a specific community are friendly. You can speak to residents and staff members of the community to find out if the staff members offer efficient customer services. You may find it difficult to move to a retirement community but this can be your doorway to a new life full of new experiences, interests and friendships.
