As a young designer and fashion enthusiast, Gabrielle Arruda moved from Chicago to New York to soak up the knowledge and history of fashion in the city. After graduating from Parsons The New School for Design and working for various designers, she chose to launch her career in fashion with her debut Spring/Summer 2014 collection.
Her debut Spring/Summer 2014 collection takes inspiration from one of the natural elements of the earth, wind. The design for each garment was made to embody the movement and energy wind provides to farms in rural areas. The collection stands as her entrance in the fashion world as a modern designer. Although wind is intangible, the collection evokes a physical concept to the idea and the energy that comes from it.
What makes her collection stand apart from other designers you ask? Having a fully functional line of clothing made in the USA is one of facets she proudly represents. For Gabrielle Arruda, the point was to provide well designed high fashion garments without sacrificing quality.
With wind as a dominant inspiration behind her debut collection, she named it "Energy". To personify the movement and power of wind she used lightweight yet classic fabric to create pieces for her ideal modern customer. The play on silhouettes within the collection gives it a sophisticated yet classic feel without sacrificing the sensual appeal of the garments.
The collection carries everything from skirts and dresses to shorts and pants. All garments included varying necklines to create a distinct sophistication and character of the garment. Organic fabrics like silk, cotton, and linen were used to illustrate the flow from wind as it creates energy. Each garment is comfortable, yet sophisticated.
Within the "Energy" collection you can find everything the modern woman needs on varying occasions like evening dresses, gowns, and both pants and shorts suits. Gabrielle Arruda made sure that her collection moved with the flow as wind does. The modern woman is always in motion so light fabrics and designs are necessary to evoke the personification of wind within the collection. One of the standout pieces within the collection is a top with a silk chiffon neck piece. The silk neck piece moves like a woman in motion and stands as a statement piece. Other items in the collection include coats, vest and jackets to complete the look.
Gabrielle Arruda's work goes beyond fashion with heavy roots in the community. Her Spring/Summer 2014 collection focuses on the modern woman and her beliefs of equality in the workplace find inspiration off the runway as well. Part of the proceeds from one item in her collection will go toward a charity celebrating the empowerment of women. Gabrielle is also creating a logo pin to help raise money for breast cancer research.
Gabrielle Arruda is currently working on the finishing touches of her next collection before debuting it in 2014. The second installation of her collection will be a Fall/Winter line. The designer has made an effort to create a force to be reckoned with by reaching out on various platforms of social media like Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.
